Breathing for health
The benefits of proper breathing for physical health and wellbeing are well known, it is essential for our bodies as it allows for the proper functioning of the brain, nerves, glands and other internal organs. Oxygen rich blood is the key element needed by the body to create healthy cells. Healthy cellular regeneration is essential for good health. The brain requires more oxygen than any other (body) organ and if it is deficient, you can feel mentally sluggish, think negative thoughts, be depressed, and even suffer from vision or hearing problems in the long term. On a purely physical level

Breathing for personal transformation
Core Connection Breathwork is a process for inner exploration, primarily understanding the relationship between the way we think and feel and how this relationship has a direct impact on our health and wellbeing. It is an extremely efficient technique to release stress, through accessing and understanding the root cause. You are guided by a trained practitioner to explore and re evaluate past events (feelings and decisions made around them) freeing you to change your perspective of situations, even when you are unable to change the situation itself.
Very few people I encounter have been taught how to process their emotions in a healthy way and yet everyone I see wants to feel better, how can we possibly hope to feel better when we have trained ourselves not to feel!

Counselling and beyond
Incorporating Core Connection Breathwork in a counselling session allows for a much deeper connection to Self. This is important because our earliest conditioning and development of the Inner Belief System (thinking that runs our lives) begins before we can consciously remember. In a CCB session people quite often go back to these earlier experiences, release the emotional responses that were repressed and held in the body at the time, re evaluate the event, and change their perspective of what happened. Realising decisions made about these events are no longer relevant or appropriate.
As a consequence of conscious breathing most people at the very least have a sense of feeling lighter, being more at peace, and are able to see things with greater clarity. Many also report having a deep understanding and experience of the interconnectedness of all things.
History of Breathwork
Dr Stanislov Grof and Leonard Orr first developed Breathwork as a technique for personal development and psychotherapy more than 30 years ago. Over the past 16 years I have incorporated with Breathwork the principles of NLP (neuro linguistic programming) developed by Bandler and Grindler, body awareness and Innerchild work (Alice Miller, John Bradshaw etc) and found that integrating these mentally orientated therapies with conscious breathing allows for greater clarity around the way we process our thoughts and emotions.
"My first experience of Breathwork (nearly 20 years ago) was certainly a life changing event. I had been irritable and stressed out, thinking it was my heavy workload and husbands inability to connect with me that was the cause of my stress. So I went on a retreat and said,” I’ll have one of everything, I need help”! A wonderful nutritionist/naturopath gave me food for thought on my eating habits and I could see how that would make a difference, a couple of massages had me feel really good physically, one of these every week would definitely help to lower my stress levels. So when it came to the session that incorporated Breathwork I thought how on earth will this help? What I need is someone to talk to me, give me some new skills on how I could get my husband to change!
Asked what I wanted to get out of the session I said, oh some peace, I am exhausted. I was invited to lie down in a comfortable position and connect up my breath, within moments my body was tingling and my hands felt heavy I am very visual so I immediately saw an image of my beautiful, then nearly 2 year old daughter and the tears welled up and overflowed. For 5 years we had been on the IVF program to have a child and in that moment I realised I had held onto all the stress of that process and my impatience at it not working and just kept busy in order not to deal with my hurt, fear and frustration. It was safer to be angry with my husband, stay busy and overload myself with work, than stop and feel.
Consciously I had no idea that this is what I had been doing. and how could I have ever found this out? One breath session had me connect up so many dots in my life, I was able to change my perception on so many things. It was like seeing snapshots of my life’s events and reviewing all my decisions around them. At the end I was just so relieved, I didn’t have to leave my husband or change him!"
Now this was a particularly important event in my life but many of us do the same thing around seemingly less significant day to day events. We simply don’t make the time to process our response to life’s challenges, we usually don’t know how.
This simple breathing process and the guidance of a practitioner will allow you to explore and re evaluate past /present events, realising as a consequence it is generally our perception of events that needs to change not the events themselves.
I have had the privilege of guiding many, many people through this process, doing so has changed me, enriched me, and allowed me to feel an enormous sense of gratitude for life. I continue to be amazed at the human spirit, our ability to bounce back from adversity with just a little help and support.
What to expect after?
Because of the subtle yet profound depth of this process it is possible and usual for there to be some processional effects, especially after your initial session. Many of these effects are – an increase in energy, a distinct lack of anxiety, deeper insights on many current and earlier life issues, the ability to respond to situations more easily, a lightness and joyfulness of being ok with who you are, just as you are.
If there are considerable challenges that you need to resolve it can take some time and at times feel that you take a couple of steps forward and one back but each step forward makes such a difference and the steps that have you feel you are going backwards are more about taking time to finally feel what has so long been repressed and putting into the action what is necessary for healing.
How often can I breathe in this way?
You may be content with just one session so insightful can be the experience, however every breath session is different and you can overtime learn to use the process yourself day to day in a short version just to check in with yourself and increase body awareness. Every session has you understand and connect with more of who you are and taking the time to do this is extremely worthwhile.
